Drink a Beer, Save for Retirement

When it comes to planning for retirement, even small steps can make a big difference. In Oregon, everyday activities like enjoying a beer can be turned into savings through the OregonSaves program and BottleDrop recycling. Together, they offer a creative and practical way to build long-term financial security.

What is OregonSaves?

OregonSaves is a retirement savings program that automatically enrolls workers into an IRA through payroll deductions, making it simple to start saving. Key highlights include:

  • Easy Enrollment: Accounts are automatically set up via payroll deductions.
  • Universal Access: Available to all workers in Oregon, regardless of employer size.
  • First in the Nation: Launched to help over one million workers without retirement plans.
  • State Law Requirement: Employers must offer a retirement option or enroll staff in OregonSaves.
  • Flexibility: Workers can opt in or out at any time and withdraw contributions without penalty.
  • No Cost to Taxpayers: The program is funded by saver fees, not tax revenue.

Since its launch, OregonSaves has helped Oregonians save more than $200 million for retirement.

Contribution Limits

For 2024, IRA contribution limits are:

  • Up to $7,000 if under 50
  • Up to $8,000 if 50 or older

Roth IRA eligibility also depends on income limits. These limits apply across all IRAs (both Traditional and Roth).

Turning Recyclables into Retirement Savings

BottleDrop makes it possible to link your recycling refunds directly to your Oregon College Savings Plan (OCSP), which can complement your retirement strategy. Here’s how:

  1. Log in to your BottleDrop account.
  2. Select Oregon College Savings Plan (OCSP) from the dashboard.
  3. Go to Manage Accounts and choose Add New Recipient.
  4. Enter your OCSP account details and contribution amount (minimum $5).
  5. Save changes to begin automatic transfers.

You can also make one-time transfers anytime, and even link multiple BottleDrop accounts to a single OCSP account—letting friends and family contribute too.

A Smarter Way to Save

Retirement saving doesn’t have to feel daunting. With OregonSaves and BottleDrop, Oregonians have innovative tools to turn everyday habits into long-term financial security. So next time you enjoy a beer, remember: those empty cans can help fund your retirement.
