Federal Refunds: Dispelling Common Myths

After taxpayers finish filing their federal tax returns, the expectation of receiving a refund arises. Yet, various misconceptions frequently lead taxpayers astray. Here are several common myths that can be misleading — and the facts behind them.

Myth #1: Contacting the IRS or your preparer gives you a faster, more precise refund date

Reality: The most reliable way to check your refund status is online through the Where’s My Refund? tool or the IRS2Go app. The automated refund hotline (800-829-1954) provides the same information. Only call the IRS if the tool specifically instructs you to.

Myth #2: Ordering a tax transcript will reveal your refund date

Reality: A transcript shows what’s been filed and adjusted but will not reveal when you’ll get your refund. Use the “Where’s My Refund?” tool for updates on status, approval, and disbursement.

Myth #3: No deposit date means the tool is wrong

Reality: The tool updates once per day, usually overnight. Refunds typically arrive within 21 days, but delays occur if extra review is needed. Also allow time for your bank to process deposits or for mailed checks to arrive.

Myth #4: If your refund is smaller, the tool must be flawed

Reality: Refund reductions often result from IRS adjustments or offsets by the Treasury’s Bureau of Fiscal Service for debts like child support, state taxes, or student loans. You’ll receive a letter explaining any changes. Always check “Where’s My Refund?” first.

Myth #5: Receiving a refund means no need to adjust withholding

Reality: A refund doesn’t guarantee correct withholding for 2024. Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to check if your employer is withholding enough. Life changes like marriage, divorce, or new dependents should prompt updating Form W-4 so withholding stays accurate throughout the year.
