Missed tax filing deadline concept with calendar and clock

What to Do if You Missed the Tax Filing Deadline

Missing the April deadline to file your 2023 federal income tax return can feel overwhelming, but the IRS provides several ways to get back on track. Acting quickly can reduce penalties, minimize interest, and help you regain peace of mind.

File and Pay What You Can

Even if you cannot pay in full, file your return as soon as possible and pay what you can to reduce fees:

  • Late-Filing Penalty: 5% per month of unpaid taxes (max 25%).
  • Late-Payment Penalty: 0.5% per month of unpaid taxes (max 25%).
  • Interest: Currently 8%, compounded daily.

If more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is $485 or 100% of unpaid tax, whichever is less. The fastest payment method is IRS Direct Pay.

Payment Options if You Can’t Pay in Full

  • Short-Term Payment Plan: For balances under $100,000; up to 180 days to pay.
  • Long-Term Payment Plan: For balances under $50,000; monthly payments up to 72 months. (Direct debit required if $25,000–$50,000.)

Plans can be set up online with instant confirmation. While interest continues to accrue, failure-to-pay penalties are cut in half when an installment agreement is active.

Penalty Relief Options

  • First-Time Penalty Abatement: Available if you’ve been compliant the last three years.
  • Reasonable Cause Relief: Granted if late filing or payment was due to circumstances beyond your control.

Note: Interest on unpaid taxes continues to accrue even if penalties are removed.

Automatic Extensions for Certain Taxpayers

  • Disaster Area Taxpayers: Automatically receive extra time to file and pay.
  • Expats & Military Personnel: U.S. citizens abroad and military personnel serving overseas or in combat zones receive automatic extensions.
