There’s no better time than now to consider filing a tax extension if your return isn’t ready. While an extension gives you more time to *file*, it doesn’t extend your time to *pay*. Estimate and pay what you owe by the original deadline to avoid penalties.
What the Extension Does — and Doesn’t
Filing an extension (Form 4868 for individuals) gives you extra time to complete your paperwork. But note: it does not extend your deadline to pay any taxes owed. If you underpay, penalties and interest may still apply.
Who Qualifies for More Time?
- U.S. citizens living abroad
- Taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas
- Those serving in combat zones or certain hazardous duty fields
Steps to File an Extension
- Complete Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension
- Estimate your tax due and make a payment by the original deadline
- File the extension by the deadline (typically April 15 or 18)
