Ways Summer Activities Can Impact Your Tax Return Next Year

Summer is for fun, but some of your warm-weather choices can carry tax consequences. From side gigs to vehicle use, these activities could affect your return. Here’s what to watch out for.

1. Side Hustles & Gig Work

If you pick up seasonal jobs (rideshare, deliveries, lawn care, etc.), you’ll likely need to report that income. Keep good records of earnings and expenses (fuel, supplies). You may owe self-employment tax.

2. Travel & Vacation Deductions (if business-related)

If part of your trip was for legitimate business (meetings, conferences, site visits), you may deduct certain costs like lodging, meals, or mileage — but only the portion tied to business, not personal fun.

3. Use of Personal Vehicles

When you use your car for business activities (deliveries, travel between job sites, etc.), you may deduct mileage or actual costs. Track your usage (mileage logs, fuel receipts) to support your deductions.

4. Home Office or Workspace

If you worked from home part of the summer (e.g. handling bookings, admin, client calls), you might qualify for a home office deduction — if you meet IRS rules for exclusive and regular use.
